Career — 58 years of IT architecture

At 18, I built the annual statistics system for Finland’s Cooperative Banks (OKOBANK, 1968–76) with no formal training — learning backwards from IBM’s own program libraries. I then served as Programming Manager at the Kansa insurance group (1976–79), Consulting Manager at Tietotehdas (1979–84), Training Manager at CAP Programator (1985–86), and finally as partner and board member at KPMG Wideri Consulting (1987–92).

Since 1986 I have run my own company, Compunication Oy, as CEO — sales, accounting, management consulting, technical consulting, and project leadership.

In 1989 I received business architecture training at KPMG Nolan Norton & Co (Lexington, Massachusetts) under Harvard Business School professor Richard L. Nolan — Business Visioning, Business Architecture, Information Architecture, and IT architecture design. Out of this grew my own methodology, KENDO® TQM Europe, which has since been used across numerous Finnish companies as well as in Nepal.

Nepal and international work

In 1995–97 I served as team leader in Kathmandu on the Nepal Telecom corporate database project — EU-audited, with exceptionally high productivity. Since then I have carried out numerous further IT projects in Nepal, working alongside Nepali colleagues both on-site and remotely from Finland.

In 2015–17 I served as main contractor in Kathmandu on the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Government of Nepal’s MARS project (Municipal Administration and Revenue System).

I conducted preliminary studies on solid waste and wastewater management in Kathmandu, and won the solid waste tender against 18 top international bidders.

In 2011–2014 I coached executives and specialists in Finland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic on Indian project culture and working life for IT outsourcing engagements in India (KPMG Finland).

Additional work experience in Sweden, the Czech Republic, Russia, Vietnam, Thailand, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Spain.

Other notable work

For Imatran Voima Oy (the Finnish state energy company), 1987–90: numerous IT consulting assignments including IT architecture, project methodology, and nuclear power plant IT security auditing (as a contractor; the specialist technical work itself was carried out by qualified experts), plus IT training design and delivery.
